James' Interpretation: The location of this dream takes place in a bathroom, which is symbolic of purity and cleansing. It can also represent one's elimination system. In this particular dream, James is in a bathtub, taking a bath. This, again, can be a reference to cleansing. Tubs, being able to hold water, can also represent the womb; in this context, the dream might be telling James something relating to his own birth (when he was in the womb). In the dream, James has the shower curtain drawn. This can suggest a need for privacy, or that in life James is a naturally private person, and has been that way since birth. It can also suggest that James may have a tendency to be emotionally closed off from others. This is represented by James being in water, an element connected to, and associated with, our emotions and feelings, as well as the comings and goings of the people in and out of the bathroom. Also, the womb being a symbol of life, can suggest James understands that people come and go throughout our lives, each being present for only a certain period of time. Just as James is doing his own thing in the bathroom (taking a bath), the dream is also saying that he lets other people do their own thing as well. And, since the curtain being drawn represents James' need for privacy, it also says he, in turn, is respecting the privacy of others (people can't see him, and he can't see them). Then the wife of the store manager comes into the bathroom. This is an indirect link to James' workplace. Her name being Alice, brings to mind all symbolism associated with "Alice in Wonderland," as well as the sitcom "Alice" that starred Linda Lavin. Hearing her voice, James pulls back the curtain. This says that, in certain situations, or with certain people, James will open up emotionally, being vulnerable and exposing a side of himself people rarely see (James being naked in the water).
